Dear friends and students in Applied Optimum Design Lab
各位親愛的朋友與應用最佳化實驗室的同學們
I heard the sad news last Saturday and spoke to Mrs Tseng and children over telephone. I lost a very very dear friend who had helped and taught me so much throughout the past 26 years.
我於上週六得知這個悲痛的消息，並已經與曾師母及孩子們通過電話。我失去了一位在過去26年間曾經幫助我並使我獲益良多的親密好友。
You might not know how Prof Tseng and his students in Applied Optimum Design Lab helped me and my family about 13 years ago. They took turn to accompany my mother and myself every night while my father was in ICU for 11 months as I was stationed in Singapore. Without their helping hands, I think that very difficult time in my life was much harder to survive for us (my mother, my wife, and children). This is why I know well his students (your seniors) in the earlier days like Drs Weihan Wang, Shi-How Su, Twsancheng Wang, and many others (more than 15 of them offered their help) so well.
大夥兒們或許不曉得在十三年前曾教授以及他實驗室的學生們是如何協助我與我的家人們。當我身處新加坡，父親被送進加護病房的11個月之間，他們輪流陪伴、照護我的母親。若是沒有他們的援手，我想在當時對我們而言（包括我的母親、內人與孩子們）已是非常艱難的處境，將會變得更加艱困，甚至難以繼續順利生活下去。這就是為什麼我會與他早期的學生，也就是你們的學長們如王維漢、蘇士豪、王傳承及其他學生們如此熟識的原因（當時有超過15位同學都曾經提供協助）。
I also remember those day after Prof Tseng and his family moved to TaiChung and joined me in car industry to realize a dream shared by us. He was in charge of engineering and contributed a lot to the company and his colleagues including me. He worked extremely hard and did not take proper rest when caught cold and got the damn kidney problem, a disease even a person as strong as him could not defeat. However, even badly troubled by the illness all the time, he rejoined Jaio Tong University and worked as hard as before to be a good professor to students as you all witnessed. I also continued to play the same role - a recipient receiving his help in many ways during the past 13 years.
我也都還記得，當年曾老師與家人搬遷到台中，加入我的行列，與我ㄧ起服務於汽車產業，共同胼手胝足追逐、實現我們的理想與夢想。他當時是負責工程的部份，並對公司與他的同事們（包括我）貢獻良多。在他感冒的時候，同時腎臟也發生嚴重的問題，連像他這麼堅毅的人都無法對抗，然而他還是非常拚命地工作，並未取得適當地休息。雖然持續一直受到這個疾病的困擾，他仍然選擇重新回到交通大學，一如往常地認真工作，成為大家所認識的，一位使學生獲益匪淺的良師。我也擔任同樣的角色，在過去的13年間，持續地在各個方面接受他提供的助益。
My deceased wife, Shau-Yuin, would join me with her deepest grief to Prof Tseng's death if she were still around. We all were young when Chin Huang and YaoLiang were students in National Cheng Kung University. Those happy moments we spend together with Ching Hsieh, Daniel Chi, and Wenyi Lye vividly appeared in my mind these two days. Prof Tseng, as Prof Arora said in his email, is a brave man who endured adversity with dignity and courage. He helped others without expectation of any return. He is a very very decent person.
我已往生的妻子，小雲，如果還在世的話，聽聞曾教授的死訊，將會如我一般悲痛得不能自已。當錦煥與瑤娘還是成功大學的學生時，我們也都還年輕。那些快樂的日子，與謝錦杰、紀崇楠與賴文沂共同生活的快樂時光，這兩天以來，栩栩如生，不斷地浮現在腦海之中。曾老師是個勇敢的人，就如同他的恩師Arora教授在他的信中所提到的，他在遭遇逆境、困難的時候，選擇以勇氣與尊嚴來面對。他在助人的同時是不帶有任何期待回報的心態的。他真的是一個非常樂於助人，並且態度非常親切的人。
I know you'll help Mrs Tseng and 2 children to pass the difficult period.
Please let me know if I can be of any help. Please also pass this messages for me to your current and previous fellow students of your Lab. I wish to tell them how fortunate they are having such a beautiful person as their teacher.
我知道大夥兒們都會同心協力，協助曾師母與2個孩子一同度過這段非常時期。如果需要任何的協助一定要告訴我。也請替我傳達這個訊息給曾老師所有的學生。我真心希望能夠告訴他們：他，是一位如此出色與完美的人，能夠成為他的學生，真的是前幾世修來的福氣。
